Before the lesson
Retain page 2 for checking. Review a / an by the next sound and demonstrate first mention versus later mention with a simple object. Clarify that some isolated sentences allow more than one context.
- Complete Part 1, linking the town and computer examples to their previous introductions.
- Complete Part 2, following each short text's referents. Trace a dog becoming the dog and an artist becoming the artist.
- Compare with the key and ask what context makes each choice appropriate. As an optional extension, write a two-sentence introduction and follow-up about an object.
Support and extension
For support, mark first and later mentions with different colours. For an extension, explain how a bird in a tree differs from a bird in the tree. The key suggests the tree and the airport, but an unspecified tree or airport may justify a tree or an airport. Accept defensible context-sensitive answers while preserving the intended linked-text practice.
Suggested approach. Adjust the pace and number of questions to suit your class.
