Before the lesson
Keep the key separate and model can plus a base verb without do or an added -s. Explain that ability and permission may depend on the situation.
- Complete Part 1 and decide what each finished sentence means.
- Compare choices with the key. Ask learners to explain plausible alternatives where no ability or permission clue is supplied.
- Complete Part 2 using the printed yes/no clues, then read question-and-answer pairs aloud.
Support and extension
For support, display Can you…?, Yes, I can and No, I can't. Several Part 1 sentences can be positive or negative in a suitable context, so do not mark a sensible alternative wrong solely because it differs from the suggested key. An optional extension is to invent a situation that makes each choice clear.
Suggested approach. Adjust the pace and number of questions to suit your class.
