Before the lesson
Prepare the single adult B2 vocabulary page. These are open-ended speaking questions, with no fixed key; imagined workplace or study situations are acceptable.
- Read the meanings and examples, noticing where a noun or pronoun fits inside take something seriously and take something into account.
- Prepare and discuss the eight questions in pairs, explaining a risk, opportunity or decision rather than simply naming it. Retain the prepositions in responsibility for and pride in.
- Ask follow-up questions about initiative and taking time off. Review natural phrasing and distinguish the sheet's positive sense of taking advantage of an opportunity from other possible uses.
Support and extension
Provide example situations for learners without workplace experience. Extend with advice for an imaginary new colleague using three expressions; private work or family circumstances need not be disclosed.
Suggested approach. Adjust the pace and number of questions to suit your class.
