A simple way to teach it
Before the lesson
Print page 1 for learners and keep page 2 as the key. This works best after learners have met the structures: it checks word order across several forms rather than introducing one new tense.
- Model the first item, identifying the subject, verb and time expression. Ask learners to use every supplied word or phrase once.
- Complete the ten items and compare in pairs. Give attention to auxiliary order in questions and the base verb after didn't.
- Check complete sentences, capitals and punctuation. Discuss why a time expression can sometimes move to the beginning without changing the meaning.
Support and extension
For support, identify the subject or question word before arranging the rest. For an extension, ask pairs to answer the three completed questions. Accept natural alternative orders using all the given words, including the time-expression and because-clause alternatives noted in the key.
