Before the lesson
Print one page per learner. Be ready to model a few familiar examples such as tomato, zed/zee and vitamin; no answer key is required.
- Begin with the familiar entries near the top. Point out that Z differs as a letter name, while /z/ in words is unchanged.
- Compare vowel differences and the stress mark in the IPA. Use advertisement to illustrate the change in main stress.
- Read the variant notes together: route has two accepted US models, zebra also has a long-vowel UK variant, and niche has two US models.
Support and extension
Choose a few relevant words rather than teaching all eleven at once. Keep this as an awareness sheet; learners do not need to imitate both accents.
Suggested approach. Adjust the pace and number of questions to suit your class.
