A simple way to teach it

Before the lesson

Clarify culture shock and reverse culture shock. Invite an imagined move or a change of school or workplace when learners have not lived abroad.

  1. Explain culture shock and develop an experience or imagined example involving unfamiliar routines.
  2. Describe practical adaptation difficulties and ways a newcomer might find support.
  3. Compare with page 2's models and revise a broad cultural claim with a specific situation and a qualification.

Support and extension

For support, organise an answer as difficulty, example and possible response. Extend by contrasting arriving abroad with returning home. The marriage prompt is optional to answer personally; focus on respectful language and individual differences rather than national stereotypes.

Suggested approach. Adjust the pace and number of questions to suit your class.
