Before the lesson
Check age and cultural suitability and offer an alternative topic. Clarify legal, illegal, medical and recreational as vocabulary; no personal substance-use disclosure is needed.
- Plan an answer about regulation, separating the proposed policy from the reason for it.
- Develop the help-versus-punishment response with an example or a distinction between different situations.
- Compare with page 2's possible answers and check that an opinion about purchase age is phrased as a proposal, not an assertion of current law.
Support and extension
Support with I would regulate... because... and However,.... Extend by identifying what evidence a policy argument would need. The models are not legal or medical guidance; avoid diagnosis, instructions for substance use and assumptions about classmates.
Suggested approach. Adjust the pace and number of questions to suit your class.
