Before the lesson
Clarify white lie, tactful, direct and trustworthy. Use invented everyday situations rather than asking learners to admit dishonesty or accuse named people.
- Explain a view about honesty with an example of a mistake or a promise.
- Compare a white lie with tactful criticism, identifying what information the other person needs.
- Use page 2's models to revise a general claim about guilt or public responsibility, allowing exceptions and avoiding unsupported accusations.
Support and extension
Support with In this situation... because.... Extend by rewriting blunt feedback so it remains honest but useful. The eight models are possible moral arguments, not one correct set of beliefs; assess consistency, examples and clarity rather than conformity.
Suggested approach. Adjust the pace and number of questions to suit your class.
