A simple way to teach it

Before the lesson

Clarify retire, pension and ageing population. Learners may imagine a future retiree; do not ask them to disclose savings, income or financial arrangements.

  1. Develop a preferred retirement age and activity plan, giving reasons and conditions.
  2. Write about pension adequacy and the possible pressures of an ageing population, distinguishing individual needs from general claims.
  3. Compare with page 2's models and revise one answer to acknowledge uncertainty or variation between places.

Support and extension

Offer If I could... I would... for hypothetical plans. Extend by considering a non-financial challenge such as routine or social contact. This is discussion writing, not financial planning; the sample answers are not pension eligibility rules or investment recommendations.

Suggested approach. Adjust the pace and number of questions to suit your class.
