Before the lesson
Contrast achievement, financial security and status. Allow small achievements and fictional family examples so the task does not become a comparison of learners' income or qualifications.
- Describe an achievement or an admired person and explain the criteria used to call it success.
- Write about family expectations and repeated failure, connecting experiences to a lesson or changed approach.
- Use the page 2 models to revise a claim about wealth, money or connections with an example and a qualification.
Support and extension
Support with For me, success means... rather than.... Extend by comparing two definitions of success. The models are possible viewpoints, not promises that hard work leads to wealth; evaluate reasoning, organisation and language.
Suggested approach. Adjust the pace and number of questions to suit your class.
