Before the lesson
Review colleague versus supervisor, salary versus promotion, and schedule versus workload. Learners can use a fictional workplace, school project or future job; employment experience and disclosure of pay are not required.
- Read the bank and complete the sentences, looking for clues such as a person, an amount of work or a time limit.
- Compare answers, explain the clues and check against page 2. Draw attention to phrases such as flexible hours, work overtime and heavy workload.
- Use the three printed questions to discuss successful and pleasant workplaces. Add reasons to the salary-versus-hours preference without requiring actual salary details.
Support and extension
For support, group entries into people, conditions and tasks before filling gaps. For an extension, write a brief description of an imagined ideal workplace using selected terms. Gap answers follow the once-only bank and key; discussion has no fixed answer. Assess appropriate word choice and reasons rather than a preferred employment arrangement.
Suggested approach. Adjust the pace and number of questions to suit your class.
