Before the lesson
Print the task separately from the page 2 key and provide writing space in notebooks. Review meanings before opposites where necessary, using neutral examples rather than asking learners to label classmates.
- Begin with reliable / unreliable, then attempt the remaining list. Encourage learners to distinguish an unfamiliar original adjective from an unknown opposite.
- Compare with the key and discuss alternatives such as generous / mean and calm / agitated. Explain that these describe a contrast in a suitable situation, not always interchangeable words.
- Choose four pairs and write one sentence per pair. Ask partners to check whether the sentence gives enough context to make the contrast clear.
Support and extension
For support, supply short definitions and a mixed answer bank. For an extension, compare crowded / empty or local / global in a specific setting and suggest another possible contrast. Use the key's accepted alternatives, including unconfident and unsociable where appropriate; writing has no single fixed answer.
Suggested approach. Adjust the pace and number of questions to suit your class.
