Before the lesson
Separate the task and page 2 key and provide notebooks. Select a few difficult meanings to review with short contexts, such as a credible explanation or a feasible proposal. The task is vocabulary practice, not a test of specialist knowledge.
- Attempt the list and mark words whose meaning needs clarification. Ask pairs to explain a proposed opposite before checking the key.
- Compare the suggested answers and alternatives. Discuss genuine / artificial or fake in suitable contexts, and innovative / outdated or conventional as different contrasts.
- Choose four pairs and write one sentence per pair. Invite a partner to explain the intended contrast and flag a sentence that could be read in more than one way.
Support and extension
For support, give a noun context for each chosen adjective. For an extension, explore literal and figurative meanings of transparent / opaque. Treat the key as suggestions, not universal equivalences: incredible, for example, can also mean amazing, so a sentence must establish the credibility meaning. Accept suitable writing alternatives.
Suggested approach. Adjust the pace and number of questions to suit your class.
