A simple way to teach it
Before the lesson
Keep the page 2 suggested key separate and provide notebooks. Review unfamiliar originals using short noun contexts, such as a gradual change or a restrictive rule. Learners should understand the starting adjective before proposing an opposite.
- Attempt the prompts and explain selected answers to a partner. Use abrupt / gradual to establish the contrast in the context of change.
- Check the key and its alternatives. Compare conventional / radical or unconventional, fundamental / superficial or secondary, and practical / theoretical or impractical in appropriate situations.
- Choose four pairs and write one sentence per pair. Ask a partner to identify the intended meaning and suggest clarification where the contrast is ambiguous.
Support and extension
For support, supply definitions or noun phrases for a subset of the list. For an extension, change the context and propose a different contrast. Treat the key as suggested answers rather than universal equivalences: practical and theoretical can contrast in approach without being incompatible qualities. Accept suitable alternative words and sentences.
