A simple way to teach it
Before the lesson
Print page 1 and retain the suggested answers on page 2 for checking. Learners need a notebook for four extra-practice sentences. Prepare simple objects or pictures to illustrate size, temperature and height.
- Model one opposite and complete the list individually or in pairs. Mark uncertain words rather than stopping at each gap.
- Check answers and discuss old / new for objects versus old / young for people. Contrast right / wrong with right / left, and accept bright / dull where the meaning fits.
- Choose four pairs and write one sentence per pair, using one or both words as instructed. Read the sentences to a partner and check their meaning.
Support and extension
For support, provide a mixed bank of opposites for a shorter part of the list. For an extension, add a contrasting second sentence. The key gives suggested answers rather than context-free rules; accept its alternatives and appropriate meanings in the open sentence task.
