Before the lesson
Print page 1 and keep page 2 for checking. Provide notebooks for extra practice and use objects or gestures to demonstrate position. Despite the webpage's series title, do not teach every item as an adjective.
- Model up / down with a gesture, then attempt the word list. Use a familiar object to clarify inside / outside if needed.
- Check the key and show how short contrasts with long for length but tall for height. Compare old / young for people and old / new for objects, and accept slow / fast.
- Choose four pairs and write one sentence per pair using one or both words. Partners check whether the words fit their sentence.
Support and extension
For support, offer a mixed answer bank and practise sentences aloud before writing. For an extension, describe two objects using contrasting words. Use objects rather than classmates when discussing appearance or body descriptions. Accept contextual alternatives and suitable sentences, not just the key's first suggestion.
Suggested approach. Adjust the pace and number of questions to suit your class.
