Before the lesson
Keep page 2 for checking after learners attempt page 1. Provide a notebook for extra practice. Prepare short contexts for busy, light and safe so learners can see why more than one answer may fit.
- Model cheap / expensive and let learners complete the list. Encourage them to mark answers they know and ones they are unsure about.
- Compare responses with the suggested key. Discuss busy / free for a person versus busy / quiet for a place, and light / heavy versus light / dark. Accept safe / unsafe as noted.
- Choose four pairs and write one sentence per pair using one or both words. Ask partners to identify the intended meaning from each sentence.
Support and extension
For support, split the list into smaller groups with a word bank. For an extension, sort selected answers into prefixes and different-word opposites; do not imply every adjective takes the same prefix. Sentence answers vary, and valid contextual alternatives should be accepted.
Suggested approach. Adjust the pace and number of questions to suit your class.
