Before the lesson
Keep the page 2 key separate and provide notebooks. Review unfamiliar originals before learners look for their opposites. Use fictional people or neutral examples; personal marital status or feelings do not need to be disclosed.
- Model careful / careless and attempt the 24 prompts. Mark words with more than one possible meaning, such as funny or poor.
- Check the suggested answers in context. Explain funny / serious when funny means humorous, and poor / rich when discussing money. Compare the key's alternatives for modern, ready, brave and different.
- Choose four pairs and write one sentence per pair using one or both words. Ask partners to identify the meaning each sentence establishes.
Support and extension
For support, give sentence starters and a smaller word bank. For an extension, explain why a different sense of an adjective might need a different contrast. Avoid implying that every adult is simply either married or single; those are vocabulary examples, not a complete classification. Accept suitable contextual answers and varied writing.
Suggested approach. Adjust the pace and number of questions to suit your class.
