A simple way to teach it
Before the lesson
Review flat/apartment, lamp, shelf and sofa. Use a simple sketch to establish next to, on and in without requiring details of learners' real homes.
- Read to identify who lives in the flat and the rooms it contains.
- Find evidence for the six answers, keeping Ben's bed by the window distinct from Tom's bed by the door.
- Compare with page 3 and describe a real or imagined room using there is/there are and place expressions.
Support and extension
Support with a room sketch and sentence starters. Extend by describing the two beds with precise locations. Accept equivalent full-sentence answers; personal questions are open, and learners may use an invented room rather than disclose their living arrangements.
Suggested approach. Adjust the pace and number of questions to suit your class.
