Before the lesson
Use the text and six questions with page 3 kept for feedback. Check contribute, shade, specific and responsible; the two discussion prompts invite personal or imagined examples.
- Read for the narrator's initial hesitation and the unexpected usefulness of drawing. Find the two growing problems separately.
- Answer the questions about volunteer frustration and the new system. Distinguish specific jobs and the watering list from the invitation to take spare vegetables.
- Review equivalent full-sentence answers. Discuss fair divisions of work and the social benefits shown by recognising neighbours and the child reading a sign.
Support and extension
Offer a contribution / difficulty / change chart. Extend by designing a simple job list for a fictional shared project, including roles for people with different skills.
Suggested approach. Adjust the pace and number of questions to suit your class.
