A simple way to teach it
Before the lesson
Print page 1 and keep the answer key on page 2 separate. Learners should already have met the past simple. Decide whether to allow a verb reference for a supported first attempt.
- Model work → worked and go → went. Explain the asterisks, then let learners complete the forms individually.
- Compare answers and identify which forms need more practice. Check study → studied and the pronunciation of past read, which is spelled the same but pronounced /red/.
- Use the extra-practice lines for three past-simple sentences. Ask partners to check the verb form and whether each sentence describes a past event.
Support and extension
For support, work through ten verbs at a time. For an extension, turn the three sentences into a short account of yesterday. The key accepts both travelled and traveled. Treat irregular forms as vocabulary to practise, not as errors that an -ed rule can solve.
