A simple way to teach it
Before the lesson
Review journey, manager, path and route. Distinguish the usual thirty-minute bus journey from the forty-minute walk.
- Read for why Ruby changes her travel plan and what she discovers beside the river.
- Reread for six full-sentence answers, noticing the closed road, manager call and riverside path.
- Check page 3 and discuss travel to work or school, contrasting Ruby's past Tuesday with her current twice-weekly walks.
Support and extension
Support with a before/after routine chart. Extend by comparing walks when it is sunny with taking the bus when it rains. Do not confuse leaving fifteen minutes earlier with journey length; accept equivalent answers grounded in the text and keep personal discussion open.
