Before the lesson
Print the story and questions on pages 1–2. Keep page 3 for checking answers. The four vocabulary explanations are already on the student sheet; no cooking equipment or recipe research is needed.
- Read once to find out what Lily cooks and how the meal ends. Check recipe, pan, salt and bowl using the vocabulary box.
- Reread for the six questions. Ask learners to point to the supporting detail before writing a complete sentence, then compare answers in pairs.
- Use the two discussion prompts to move from Lily's story to learners' experiences. Ask what they can cook and what they would make for a friend.
Support and extension
For support, let learners answer orally before writing and underline relevant details in the text. For an extension, ask them to retell Lily's morning using first, then and finally. Accept equivalent answers with the same meaning; the two discussion questions have no fixed answers.
Suggested approach. Adjust the pace and number of questions to suit your class.
