Before the lesson
Print page 1 and retain the suggested key on page 2 for checking. Provide notebooks for extra practice. Prepare short contexts for active, civil and conscious rather than assuming each word has only one sense.
- Model compulsory / optional, then attempt the list. Mark uncertain meanings separately from uncertain opposites.
- Compare answers with the key. Discuss active / passive versus active / inactive, civil / uncivil or rude in the politeness sense, and precise / vague or imprecise.
- Choose four pairs and write one sentence per pair, using one or both words as instructed. Partners check whether the context makes the intended contrast clear.
Support and extension
For support, give a mixed answer bank for a smaller section. For an extension, compare compulsory and mandatory in suitable noun phrases. Accept the key's alternatives and other defensible contextual answers; the writing task has no single fixed key. Do not treat neutral / biased as an exact contrast in every possible sense.
Suggested approach. Adjust the pace and number of questions to suit your class.
