Before the lesson
Retain the page 2 key for discussion after the first attempt. Provide notebooks and prepare neutral contexts such as a concise explanation or a viable plan. Avoid using the character adjectives to evaluate classmates.
- Attempt the prompts and explain the meaning behind selected answers. Use concise / verbose to demonstrate a contrast that does not depend on a prefix.
- Compare the key and accepted alternatives, including candid / dishonest and tenacious / irresolute. Discuss how pragmatic / idealistic or wary / trusting may contrast in one context without being mutually exclusive qualities.
- Choose four pairs and write one sentence per pair using one or both words. Partners check whether the sentence supports the intended sense.
Support and extension
For support, provide definitions or short contexts for a subset of the list. For an extension, propose a second defensible contrast and explain how the context changes. Accept suitable alternatives, as the key allows; a plausible explanation matters more than matching one word mechanically. The extra-practice sentences have no fixed key.
Suggested approach. Adjust the pace and number of questions to suit your class.
