Before the lesson
Separate page 1 from the suggested key on page 2 and provide notebooks. Prepare neutral contexts rather than asking learners to label classmates. Review meanings of less familiar words such as circumspect, copious and sagacious.
- Attempt the list, explaining the intended meaning behind a few proposed answers before checking them.
- Discuss the key and its alternatives. Contrast benign / harmful in a general sense with the printed malignant example, and consider gregarious / reserved or incisive / vague in suitable contexts.
- Choose four pairs and write one sentence per pair using one or both words. Partners explain why the contrast works in each sentence.
Support and extension
For support, give definitions and noun contexts for selected items. For an extension, compare a person's manner with the quality of their writing when choosing a contrast for incisive. Accept defensible contextual alternatives, not only one memorised pair. This is language practice, not medical interpretation of benign or malignant.
Suggested approach. Adjust the pace and number of questions to suit your class.
