A simple way to teach it

Before the lesson

Print the student page; the answer key can be shared after the first attempt.

  1. Ask learners to find the time expressions and identify the subject in each item.
  2. Compare bought with didn't enjoy and ask which verb carries the past meaning in each pattern.
  3. Check the buses and restaurant items separately so learners do not add did to a be sentence.

Support and extension

Use a final pair exchange about yesterday to transfer the forms into speech. Do not require one position for a time phrase when another natural order works.

Suggested approach. Adjust the pace and number of questions to suit your class.
