A simple way to teach it

Before the lesson

Review feature, trustworthy and group chat. No device or account access is needed. Ask learners to discuss habits generally without showing messages, photographs, usernames or other private information.

  1. Compare common phone uses and preferences for calls or messages. Model a short answer with a practical example.
  2. Pairs choose prompts about video calls, online information and polite phone use. Encourage a follow-up question and respectful disagreement rather than assuming everyone uses the same apps.
  3. Finish with question 20: choose three apps to keep and explain their purposes. Learners can choose types of app rather than specific brands.

Support and extension

For support, give categories such as maps, messaging and music plus I use it to… starters. For an extension, discuss what would be difficult without one of the chosen apps. Open-ended answers have no fixed key. Accept non-users' imagined answers and keep personal account details out of the discussion.

Suggested approach. Adjust the pace and number of questions to suit your class.
