Before the lesson
Review flexible, achieve, challenging and put off. Offer small everyday goals as examples. Learners may use an invented project instead of discussing private ambitions or unfinished commitments.
- Begin with something learners look forward to and a small goal for the week. Model a goal with a reason rather than a long personal account.
- Pairs select prompts about starting tasks, changing plans, priorities and setbacks. Encourage questions that clarify the next step or the reason for a choice.
- Finish with question 20: describe a project for one free month. As an optional extension, partners suggest how to divide it into smaller steps, drawing on question 13.
Support and extension
For support, provide I hope to… and First, I would… starters. For an extension, compare a detailed plan with a flexible one and explain when each might help. There is no fixed answer key; assess understandable reasons and suggestions, not whether a learner's real goal is ambitious enough.
Suggested approach. Adjust the pace and number of questions to suit your class.
