Before the lesson
Review team sport, individual sport, teammate and coach. Include walking and non-competitive activities in the warm-up. Learners can discuss spectators or imagined situations instead of their fitness or health.
- Use the opening questions to compare indoor and outdoor activities or team and individual sports. Ask for a reason behind each preference.
- Pairs select prompts about beginners, competition, equipment and encouragement. Practise responding to a partner's view with agreement, a different example or a follow-up question.
- Finish with question 19: suggest an activity for a group with different abilities. Ask pairs to explain what makes their suggestion welcoming.
Support and extension
For support, supply activity names and I prefer… because…. For an extension, discuss how a town could make that activity easier to access, linking to question 18. There is no fixed answer key; assess language and reasoning, not sporting knowledge. Keep the discussion about communication rather than personalised health advice.
Suggested approach. Adjust the pace and number of questions to suit your class.
